Originating in Scandinavia in the 1950s, Forest School is an educational approach that helps children develop a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, the natural world through play-based outdoor experiences. It forms an integral part of our curriculum, as we believe that hands-on exploration makes learning more meaningful and engaging.
Led by our qualified Forest School instructor, sessions encourage curiosity, independence, teamwork and resilience through outdoor discovery. Forest School is a child-led programme based on the belief that children learn best through direct experience. By making the most of the natural environment, participants are encouraged to take the initiative, follow their interests and develop confidence in their own abilities.
Children in their final year attend weekly sessions on Wimbledon Common, while younger children enjoy Mini Forest School activities within our nursery gardens and on Wandsworth Common. The programme includes observing seasonal changes, exploring habitats, identifying wildlife and insects, and learning how to use real tools safely and responsibly.
Through play and carefully planned activities, children develop practical and creative skills. They are also given opportunities to challenge themselves, whether balancing on logs or climbing trees, helping them to build confidence and resilience over time.
Children learn how to stay safe outdoors through games, stories and practical experiences. Above all, Forest School is designed to ensure that children have fun while learning at their own pace and developing a lifelong love of the outdoors.
Forest School supports children to:
• Develop an appreciation of nature and all living things
• Make independent choices
• Assess and manage risk safely
• Work collaboratively as part of a team
• Explore and question the world around them
• Build problem-solving skills
• Develop confidence and resilience
• Foster a positive attitude towards learning
Forest School is designed to give children the confidence to “have a go” and we provide consistent encouragement and praise to ensure that every child enjoys a positive and rewarding experience.
